Cameron Highlands is a resort town located on the main mountain range of Peninsular Malaysia. It is a picturesque highland retreat with colonial styled bungalows cast against a backdrop of lush green forest and undulating slopes of terraced tea plantations. However, over the past two decades the rate of development has been especially ram-pant. While it has benefited the local economy, poor planning and enforcement have led to environmental degradation. Landslides, silted rivers and dams, constant water disruptions and poor water quality have become the norm. It was these problems that spurred a small group of local residents to form the society of Regional Environmental Awareness Cameron Highlands (REACH), a non-profit community based organisation in 2001. It is now run by a group of volunteers with funds from membership, donations, small grants, reforestation activities and sales of souvenirs. Activities include highlighting environmental problems, creating public awareness on environmental issues and conducting water and forest biodiversity studies. In 2002 REACH decided to document orchids as they are an excellent indicator of the environmental health. The orchid survey team was formed. Over the years more than 15,000 photographs of wild orchids were taken, covering over 600 species and sixty genera (see chapter on conservation). It has culminated in this book. REACH wishes to emphasize that this book has been made possible because of the efforts of the local community. We are publishing it to showcase to the world that so much beauty lies here in our highland forests. It is therefore of utmost importance that we preserve our natural heritage.
